Sometimes we are asked to make use of unfinished space. That is exactly what this project was. Our client had a large basement that they wanted to turn into a useful space and not just storage. However, the first challenge was the sea of posts in the basement.
Working closely with a structural engineer, we laid out a plan for which posts could be moved, which could be eliminated and which posts had to stay. This involved new steel beams and a lot of discussions.
From an empty floor plate, we created this home gym with a full bathroom on one side of the basement with rubber floor to keep the noise down and mirrors on all the walls. The other side of the basement became the theatre room, card area and large home office. Bamboo paneling tied together both spaces, and padded acoustic fabric wall paneling in the theatre room keeps the noise down.
Sometimes these projects are the most fun, basements can often feel like cold and damp areas, but with the right design you can truly turn the basement into a enjoyable living space.
