This condo renovation, in one of downtown Toronto’s most exclusive addresses was a wonderful project that required delicate handling. The original brief was to update areas that needed repair work, but to do the least possible.
As our understanding of the space developed, we worked with the client to increase the scope of work to include areas that allowed for a new vision.
It’s common to change directions mid renovation, but hard to know where to stop. We worked closely with the client to develop a new direction, providing renderings for the proposed changes along the way to show them what we could accomplish. This lead to more significant changes, but ultimately the work done benefits the owners for years to come with no regrets.
A custom open on 3 sides gas fireplace with glass chimney suspended from the ceiling is the centre piece of the living space. As this new fireplace design did not allow for a TV to be mounted above it, we incorporated a roll down TV projector and screen that is concealed in the ceiling when not in use.
We see space as a whole, and each aspect, flow, texture, colour, lighting and rhythm are equally important to us. Keeping ceilings clean, designing them to be in character with the space is often overlooked and we like to ensure this surface is designed properly as much as all the other aspects.
The primary bedroom includes a custom bespoke metal and glass screen designed by us. This screen forms the backdrop for the bed, and also a visual separation between the dressing and sleeping areas.
In the primary ensuite, the custom shower, with the glass roof becomes a box within the space, that floats in the room. A stone bench inside the shower passes through the glass wall of the shower. The peak a boo window in the shower provides a city view and maintains the connected feel between the rooms. Stone walls with carved detailing maintain continuity of materials throughout the room and textural change to provide interest.
